Nazca Lines Observation Tower51 viewsWe knew we were riding through the Nazca Lines because of all the planes overhead, but we had NO idea we were literally riding 15 feet from them! Fortunately, this tower was there so we could see them.

Nazca Lines - The Tree54 viewsThis is one of two figures that can be seen from the observation tower. It is an upside down tree.

Nazca Lines from the Ground37 viewsStanding on the ground, the lines don't look like anything. They are only 5 cm deep and 20 cm wide, so you would have no idea they are anything special. When the lines were made, they put lime on them to create a hard surface. Amazingly, they are still here 2000 years later.

Biking Past the Nazca Lines58 viewsSee me on the road on the right? From where I was, I would never have even known the Nazca Lines were there.

Unretouched Nazca Lines17 viewsAlas Peruanas treated us to a significant discount on a 35 minute airplane tour of the Nazca Lines. It happened to be one of the very few cloudy days around here so the photos didn't come out that great. Although we could see the figures clearly, as you can see the photos lacked contrast. If you look carefully enough a monkey can be seen carved into the desert floor in this non-enhanced photo.

Monkey Nazca Lines20 viewsThis is the same photo with added contrast and color. It was also cropped and enlarged. The rest of the Nazca Line photos were enhanced in the same way.

Nazca Lines Observation Tower19 viewsThis is the same tower we viewed the lines from yesterday. The road is the Pan American Highway - I have no idea why they built it right through the middle of the Nazca Lines. This is "The Tree" on the left, and "Hands" on the right.

Astronaut Nazca Lines20 viewsAstronaut was different from the others - he was carved into a hillside rather than on the flat plain.

Trapezoid Nazca Lines18 viewsThere are quite a few of these trapezoids. Nobody knows what they were for, but many feel they were landing strips for spaceships. Others feel they had something to do with finding water.
