Sick Kids210 viewsFor the first time on the trip David and Daryl were sick with diarrhea and fever. They were in such bad shape they lay on the steps while Nancy & I got visas for Guatemala. We barely made it two more kilometers to a hotel with the kids so sick.

On into Guatemala148 viewsAfter three days in Melchor waiting for the kids to get better, we decided we had to move on. The first 25 km were on a very dusty road under construction and every time a truck passed, it sent thick, soupy clouds of dust billowing into the air.

Hot, Steep and Dusty Hills156 viewsIt may not look like it in the picture, but the final two kilometers of the dirt road was up a steep hill. All four of us had to walk our bikes up.

Leapfrog178 viewsDaryl wasn't strong enough to push the tandem, so John took Davy and left Daryl with the other bike. He couldn't push that one either - and I couldn't push mine - so we teamed up. Together we pushed my bike about 30 feet or so, then Daryl held my bike while I went back down to get his and take it up ahead of us a bit. We played leapfrog up the hill - both push mine, I push Davy's, both push mine, I push Davy's... until John came down to help us after pushing the tandem to the top of the hill.

Hill Country122 viewsWe had hoped the flat terrain we had early in the day would continue, but it didn't. We ended up encountering mountains around noon.

Siesta167 viewsWe've discovered there's a good reason for the afternoon siesta! We stopped at a taco stand for siesta, but it was tough since we couldn't lay down. We decided to move and find a spot where we could all take a nap
