We spent a whole year preparing for this journey. In addition to simply planning where we would go, we had to fix up the house for a renter, get our finances in order, get all our equipment together, and do a gazillion other things!

Our journey south started on the Arctic Ocean in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The first 500 miles to Fairbanks passed through some of the most remote territory on earth. We carried all our food for this 16 days as we wouldn't find a single grocery store and only three restaurants!

Our second major hurdle was to conquer all 1422 miles of the Alaska Highway. We were blessed with incredible views of the Alaska Range, which we all goggled over!

Many miles of the Alaska Highway pass through the Yukon Territory. This section of our journey is most notable for its long distances. We regularly went 200-300 miles between grocery stores, so learned quickly to load up when we did find food!

The official beginning of the Alaska Highway is in Dawson Creek, BC - for us it was the end! British Columbia also had more wildlife than we saw anywhere else - including bison, bears, Stone's sheep, caribou, and others. It was like going on safari on bikes!

We had really looked forward to cycling the Icefields Parkway in Jasper and Banff National Parks - but the rain put a damper on that! For the entire week that we were in the parks, we dealt with rain, rain, and more rain. Even so, it was beautiful and we tried hard to relax and enjoy where we were.

The highlight of Montana was riding through Glacier National Park. We also enjoyed learning about American history while we traveled through the Bitteroot Valley.

The highlight of Wyoming was cycling through Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. The weather was perfect and the fall leaves were at their peak.

Since we were so close to our hometown of Boise, we rented a car and took a side trip there to take care of alot of pressing business. On the way we stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument. While in Boise we visted with Candi, our nephew, who along with his friends entertained us with Reggai music. We also visited with Nancy's friends where we dined on the most delicious food we've had in quite some time.

The highlights of Utah was cycling Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. We continued to follow fall on its southward march.

The entire time we spent in Arizona, we spent in the Navajo Nation. We learned about the history of the area when we visited Canyon de Chelly.

New Mexico brought both a high and new low in our journey. John and Daryl were hit by a motorist in Albuquerque, but fortunately sustained no serious injuries. Later, we made our way to Truth or Consequences for Thanksgiving dinner with our good friend, Harry.

We followed the Rio Grande for miles and miles before finally reaching McAllen where we would cross into Mexico. Texas provided many challenges, including mountains, headwinds, and severe weather. But we also met many, many wonderful people who made it all worthwhile.

Our first state south of the border! The people of Tamaulipas quickly put our fears to rest - the Mexican people are some of the most friendly we've ever met.

Gosh darn! Veracruz is one long state! We had a whole host of adventures here and it's hard to sum it up. We made the transition into a hot and humid climate, which makes cycling difficult. But still - we met many wonderful people who added magic to our journey.

From the port of Veracruz we left our bikes behind took a side trip to Mexico City by bus. We discovered the canals of Xochimilco and spent two delightful days there.

Tabasco is a small state, but it's large on friendliness! (Are you noticing a theme here?) The highlight of Tabasco was staying a couple of days with the Lazo family in Villahermosa.

From Villahermosa, we took a side trip to see the Mayan ruins in Palenque. It's amazing to walk around and think of the great civilization that lived there 1500 years ago.

The best part of Campeche is the beach! For a couple days we cycled right along the white sand beaches of southern Mexico and had beautiful vistas with every twist and turn.

We didn't spend much time in Quintana Roo at all - only about 100 miles through the jungle of southern Yucatan.

We didn't spend a lot of time in Belize, but we had a fabulous time! The natural beauty, combined with the rich cultural history of the area, kept us spellbound for the entire week we were there.

Guatemala was a bit of a disappointment for us. The country itself was wonderful, but we all fell sick for the first time in the entire journey. In addition, we only made a quick dash through the northeastern part of the country, rather than going into the heart of it.

Meeting up with friends was the theme of Honduras. We met the Verhages the first day in country, and spent the next month traveling with them. Once we reached Tegucigalpa, we met Claudia and then Gloria in Choluteca - Nancy's Peace Corps family.

Managua was our favorite place in Nicaragua - due to the many wonderful people we met there. After we landed at Hosanna Church desperate for a place to pitch our tent, the church community welcomed us in with open arms.

Costa Rica means tourists - lots and lots and lots of them! It was very difficult to get off the beaten path in that country! That being said, there are some gorgeous beaches.

Panama was a surprise for us. I expected the whole country to be like Panama City or Colon, but it was a delight! Too hot, perhaps, but wonderful nevertheless.
