I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like cycling in cities. Yes, I do it. And I know I’ll do a lot more. But heck – it’s way more pleasant on the small, rural, deserted roads we’re used to cycling!
Within a few miles of our wonderful little camping spot near Laguna we entered the interstate. Although the interstate isn’t all that dangerous due to the wide shoulder, it’s certainly not pleasant cycling. The shoulder is littered with all kinds of debris and black carcasses of exploded retreads. And this shoulder had a terrible road surface on top of that!
So by the time we reached the first
We would our way through town until we pulled into
Although I used to live in

The “frontage”, access roads, old highway south or whatever you want to call them are about the same as you described heading south. Not well maintained, no shoulder, up & down, windey - BUT scenic. The interstate is just as you described: large shoulder and lots of debris. There are ups and downs but not like the state highways. You might inquire at the bicycle shop for advice. I personally would stick to the Interstate after getting out of Albuquerque - but I’m not a bicyclist. Call me if you can when you reach Socorro (80 miles north of me). See you hopefully Thursday.

We’ll ask around and figure out how to get out of here! Albuquerque is kind of like Boise - when you leave, there’s only one road - the interstate. We’ll ride the interstate if we have to, but it would be really nice if they would make some other roads!
See you soon, Harry!

I really like the picture of John and Hank! Thanks very much for putting that online. Hank and I don’t look alike, but we both like cycling and maps.
I’m sorry the Interstate was so filthy. We got lucky on I-80 in Wyoming in ‘86 - it wasn’t too bad or dirty. We were sorry we had to leave it.
There is a 10 year old boy walking from Tallahassee, FL to Atlanta, GA. He’s trying to raise $$ and awareness regarding homeless kids. I found out about him and his support crew on the local TV news. He’s keeping an online journal, and I thought you’d get a kick out of what he wrote as he walked through the area a few miles from where I work:

Today was a really exciting day. I found $1400 in stolen checks on the side of the road. We took them to the bank and that is how we found out they had been stolen. We also are only 8 miles away from were we will start our last mile. I plan on finishing it up tomorrow so I can have the weekend off before I walk my last mile. I want to thank you all for coming and reading my journal. I know most days it was pretty boring. If I walk next year I will try and have more exciting days.

I’m happy if I find a penny in the road! Anyway, I’m impressed by all that walking! I think I’ll stick to cycling for now.
I’m very happy that you made it to Albuquerque and I hope the repairs will solve every problem.
Blessings and safe miles,
