The Equator is very important. If there wasn’t an equator then it would be much harder to navigate. There is even a Greek legend about it.
The legend goes like this (I can’t remember it very well). One of the Greek gods was the driver of the sun chariot. He had a son. Some how the kid got really angry at his friends and came home crying. His father said that he could have one wish and he would grant it. The child wished to drive the chariot. The father was reluctant to let his son drive it because he knew he would get hurt, but the child insisted and the father did make a promise so he had to let his son drive it. In the morning the boy got ready to leave. His father came out and told him not to go too high and get lost in the stars or go too low and crash in the mountains. Then the boy left. Soon the horses found out that the boy was not as strong as his father and they pulled harder. They started falling. The mountains caught on fire and it all dried up and it got a lot hotter, making the Equator what it is today. And soon the boy lost his grip and fell to his death.
The Equator is 24,901.55 miles long and is at 0 degrees latitude. Latitude is used to show how far north or south you are on the world. The equator is the hottest place on earth because it is the closest to the sun. The equator is an imaginary line that goes all the way around the earth, and that is the line that the boy in the myth tried to follow.
We are going to cross the Equator very soon.

Great story, Davy. It’s been a long time since I’d read the chariot story. Sounds like Driver Ed was a good ieda even back then. :-).
