The health benefits of cycling

There is nothing quite like cycling for positive effects on your body. As you cycle you have the opportunity to please the senses aesthetically by cycling through fields and down sunlit country lanes, and cycling is tremendously beneficial to your health too.

It is commonly known that cycling is a good form of exercise and can increase physical fitness and stamina; however it benefits the body in many different ways as well.

Benefits to the immune system

The benefits to the body’s immune system that can be gained from moderate activity such as cycling are well documented. Did you know that your immune system can be considerably strengthened by cycling? It can also protect you against some cancers, increasing the fight against cells that cause tumors.

Benefits to the joints

Cycling benefits the joints because:

  • It isn’t as high impact as a sport like jogging, so joints are strengthened while being protected from short sharp shocks, and
  • Cycling strengthens the cartilages.

Both are reasons to invest in a durable bike so that you can apply these benefits to your joints immediately.

Benefits to your mental health

Cycling benefits your mental health because the circular, regular movement is relaxing without putting sudden stresses on your joints. This has been shown to regulate your emotions as well as your breathing and movements. Also, moderate exercise like cycling is known to help with mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Also, nothing benefits your psyche like fresh air and beautiful scenery, plenty of which you will get on a bike ride.

So there you are. Whether you are a professional in training or somebody who is thinking of upping their cycling time, cycling is good for both your physical and mental health.

About Nancy Sathre-Vogel

After 21 years as a classroom teacher, Nancy Sathre-Vogel finally woke up and realized that life was too short to spend it all with other people's kids. She and her husband quit their jobs and, together with their twin sons, climbed aboard bicycles to see the world. They enjoyed four years cycling as a family - three of them riding from Alaska to Argentina and one exploring the USA and Mexico. Now they are back in Idaho, putting down roots, enjoying life at home, and living a different type of adventure. It's a fairly sure bet that you'll find her either writing on her computer or creating fantastical pieces with the beads she's collected all over the world.
