Ouch! (Panama City, Panama)

I’m in pain.  Severe pain.  And I have no idea how I’m going to get over to the other side of Panama to get on this boat…

I’ve been battling an ingrown toenail for a couple months now.  Way back when, I cut my nail down to try and dig it out – nada.  I’ve just lived with it like that all this time, until now.

About four or five days ago, my toe suddenly got very painful.  Very.  I managed to get myself here to Panama City and headed off to the doctor.

“It’s infected where you cut it,” he told me.  “We can’t cut out the nail now, because the infection will just spread.”

So – I’m now taking antibiotics and painkillers and trying like heck to get this infection cleared up.  At this point, I don’t know if the ingrown toenail is hurting like heck, or the infection.  What I do know, however, is that my toe hurts like the dickens!

The problem is that we are a two day ride away from the dock for the boat to Colombia and the boat is leaving in four days.  In other words, we have to go.  Right now, we don’t have the luxury of time to let this blasted thing heal.

We still don’t know what we’re going to do – we’re batting around all the options.  Maybe I’ll hitch a ride in a truck while John and the boys cycle?  Maybe I’ll fly and meet them at the other end?  I suppose only time will tell how this all pans out…

About Nancy Sathre-Vogel

After 21 years as a classroom teacher, Nancy Sathre-Vogel finally woke up and realized that life was too short to spend it all with other people's kids. She and her husband quit their jobs and, together with their twin sons, climbed aboard bicycles to see the world. They enjoyed four years cycling as a family - three of them riding from Alaska to Argentina and one exploring the USA and Mexico. Now they are back in Idaho, putting down roots, enjoying life at home, and living a different type of adventure. It's a fairly sure bet that you'll find her either writing on her computer or creating fantastical pieces with the beads she's collected all over the world.

Could Nancy get a boat from Panama City to where ever the boat leaves in two days? Or maybe a boat from PC to Colombia and the boys ride?

Unfortunately, the boats to Colombia leave from the Atlantic side of Panama and we are now on the Pacific side. I’ve decided I’ll try riding tomorrow morning, and if I simply can’t do it I’ll hitch a ride.

That must be so frustrating. And not just because of the pain itself. I remember when my knee acted up in southern Wyoming three weeks ago and for a little while it looked like I might not be able to continue. I just hope it does work out ASAP.

    Take care,

    Jack
