During the summer of 2005, I cycled around the perimeter of the northern two thirds of the Malaysia. It was a hot, muggy trip! There were mosquitoes, sudden storms, bad hotels, and torturous roads. So why did I do it? I did it for the incredible experience to be had in the jungle. I did it for the rewards for getting off the main road and into the jungle. Which means, in this case, riding to the end of the road and then taking a dugout canoe and paddling for miles through the jungle to arrive at another place in the middle of the jungle where the road starts again. If you're willing to brave the hardships of Malaysia, the rewards are great. The main roads are boring, hot, and stinky. You'll see lots of monkeys playing in the garbage. But just get off the main road a little bit and there is a whole new world waiting to be discovered.
