During the summer of 1986 I rode my bicycle from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Rhode Island. I took the southern route passing through New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. I rode on the Natchez Trace in Mississippi and found it a great touring route. There is little traffic but I had to get way off the Trace to get to a decent grocery store. I took the Blue Ridge (North Carolina) and Skyline Drive (Virginia) and found them to be challenging routes because of the non-stop hills. Although the journey was difficult in the hot, humid month of July, the scenery and historic sites made it well worth it.
